Uganda Power Landscape: UMEME, Hydropower Risk & Load-Shedding
Uganda's electricity distribution is managed by UMEME Limited, the primary distribution licensee operating under a concession from the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA). Uganda's power generation is overwhelmingly hydropower-dependent — the Owen Falls complex at Jinja (comprising Nalubaale and Kiira dams on the Victoria Nile) and the Bujagali Hydropower Plant together supply the majority of Uganda's domestic generation capacity.
This heavy dependence on hydropower creates a structural vulnerability: when Lake Victoria water levels fall during drought years or below-average rainfall periods, reservoir levels at Owen Falls and Bujagali drop, triggering mandatory load-shedding to protect the turbines. During such periods — most recently experienced in 2016-17 and again in 2021 — load-shedding in Kampala can reach 8–12 hours daily, with upcountry areas experiencing even longer outages. Industrial and commercial consumers have no alternative but to operate diesel generators, and UPS systems are essential for bridging generator startup gaps.
Even during normal periods, voltage fluctuations and momentary outages on UMEME distribution networks are common. Industrial consumers in Jinja's manufacturing zone, banking operations in Kampala CBD, and telecom tower sites across northern and eastern Uganda all require robust power backup. The Isimba and Karuma hydropower projects have expanded national capacity, but transmission and distribution infrastructure quality remains a challenge outside Kampala.
Uganda Electrical Standard & Import Routing
Uganda operates on 240V / 50Hz (British standard), using Type G three-pin plugs. This voltage is within the standard input range of all our UPS systems — no voltage conversion or special configuration is required. Our UPS accept input from 110V to 300V, providing protection against the voltage sags and surges that UMEME distribution networks experience during peak demand.
Uganda is landlocked, with no direct sea port. All container shipments from India enter Uganda via Mombasa port in Kenya, then travel approximately 800 km along the Northern Corridor road and rail route (Mombasa–Nairobi–Eldoret–Malaba–Kampala). Total transit time from JNPT Mumbai is approximately 22–26 days door-to-port-to-Kampala. The Northern Corridor is East Africa's busiest freight route and is served by both road freight (fastest) and SGR/metre-gauge rail (cheaper for bulk). For urgent orders under 500 kg, air freight via Entebbe International Airport provides 3–5 day delivery from Mumbai.
Industries We Supply in Uganda
Telecom: MTN Uganda, Airtel, & Rural BTS Networks
Uganda's mobile network operators — MTN Uganda, Airtel Uganda, and Africell — operate thousands of base transceiver stations (BTS) across the country. Rural coverage expansion into northern, eastern, and western Uganda means a large proportion of towers are in areas with poor or no grid access, requiring solar + battery primary power or extended battery backup from weak grid supply.
We supply VRLA sealed batteries in 48V strings, the universal telecom BTS standard, in 100Ah and 200Ah capacities. Multi-string battery banks are configured for 8, 12, or 24 hours of runtime depending on the tower's solar availability and grid reliability. Batteries are shipped in standard containers with foam packaging and stacking frames, ready for direct installation at BTS sites. We also supply the rectifier-integrated battery backup units for tower cabinet installation.
NGO, INGO & Humanitarian Sector
Kampala is one of East Africa's most important hubs for international humanitarian and development organisations. The UN system (UNHCR, WFP, UNICEF, WHO, UNDP), ICRC, MSF, IRC, World Vision, and scores of bilateral development agencies maintain significant operations in Uganda, serving both Kampala-based programming and field operations across the country.
Uganda also hosts one of the world's largest refugee populations — over 1.5 million refugees, with major settlements at Bidi Bidi (Yumbe District), Nakivale (Isingiro District), Kyangwali, and Adjumani. Humanitarian organisations operating in these settlements require reliable power backup for satellite communications terminals (VSAT), medical refrigeration (vaccine cold chains), laptop charging stations, and radio communication hubs.
We supply online UPS systems from 1 kVA to 30 kVA for NGO server rooms and communications equipment in Kampala, along with portable UPS and LiFePO4 battery packs for field operations. Our units are compatible with generator power input — critical for NGO sites that rely on diesel generators as primary power in refugee settlement locations. We understand humanitarian procurement cycles and can provide proforma invoices, product specifications, and CE certificates in the formats required by UN procurement officers.
Manufacturing: Jinja Industrial Zone
Jinja, on the shores of Lake Victoria and historically Uganda's industrial capital, hosts sugar processing (Kakira Sugar Works — one of East Africa's largest), steel rolling (Steel Rolling Mills), textile manufacturing, and food processing operations. The Jinja industrial zone benefits from proximity to Owen Falls hydropower, but grid quality for heavy industry remains variable.
We supply three-phase online UPS systems from 20 kVA to 200 kVA for Jinja factory control panels, ERP systems, PLC networks, and SCADA monitoring equipment. Three-phase servo voltage stabilisers (10 kVA to 500 kVA) are also supplied for motor protection in sugar processing and textile manufacturing equipment where voltage sags directly reduce output quality and motor lifespan.
Banking & Financial Services
Uganda's banking sector includes Stanbic Uganda, DFCU Bank, Centenary Bank, Equity Bank, and Housing Finance Bank, all operating branch networks across the country. ATM machines are ubiquitous in Kampala and major towns and require stable UPS protection against the frequent voltage dips on UMEME networks. We supply single-phase UPS from 650VA to 10 kVA for ATM and branch server protection, and 20–60 kVA UPS for bank data centre rooms in Kampala.
Government & National Infrastructure
Uganda's government infrastructure — including Parliament House, the National Information Technology Authority (NITA-U) national data centre, Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) offices, Bank of Uganda, and national security communications — requires enterprise-grade UPS with generator synchronisation capability. NITA-U has invested significantly in data centre infrastructure to support e-government services, and UPS reliability is a critical procurement criterion. We supply online double-conversion UPS from 10 kVA to 500 kVA with N+1 redundancy configurations for government data centre applications.
